What is SPIDERfit?

Physical Literacy for a Lifetime of Movement

Nearly 30% of America’s children are overweight or obese.

Only 4% of children have access to daily physical education.

Aside from sports participation, most youth do not participate in any sustained physical activity. Children who play sports are experiencing unprescedented rates of injury. To counteract these disturbing trends, we need a new approach to youth fitness and healthcare– one that is relevant to the needs of today’s youth.

The modern youth healthcare and physical activity model includes a team of people: physical education teachers, classroom teachers, community centers, fitness professionals, sport coaches, pediatric medicine practitioners, and parents. While all of these people share the same goal of improving the health of our children, it appears there is no well researched, effective, centralized approach to increasing activity and decreasing obesity and injury rates.

SPIDERfit is a youth physical activity program that was developed as a culmination of best practices from a wide variety of youth fitness and healthcare professionals. Developmental pedagogy from physical education, performance enhancement from athletic performance coaches, movement training from fitness professionals, and injury screening/ prevention strategies from pediatric healthcare professionals are combined into a longitudinal program with effective strategies for all ages and developmental levels.

kids1The primary goal of the SPIDERfit program is to address the problems associated with the growing lack of physical activity and the dangers of sports overspecialization. By reeducating our children in the fundamentals of movement, we create physically literate youngsters with the tools to be active, healthy, and pain-free for life. Through simple, targeted, universal movement assessments and stratified interventions, youngsters sweat, smile, and grow smarter through strategically designed physical activity– which is presented as play! We have created an easy to follow blueprint for fun, developmentally appropriate exercise that fits a variety of physical activity arenas– including classrooms, sports practice, the gym, and home– to name a few.

The SPIDERfit model has a wide range of applications. SPIDERfit circuits, or classroom movement breaks, help students refocus and optimize learning. We also offer 10- minute fitness, performance, and injury prevention strategies that anyone can successfully use. To support and challenge every child, SPIDERfit provides assessment-driven progressions and regressions for use in physical education classes, sports practice, and with fitness professionals.  We even offer a professional certification to anyone who works with youth and wants to gain the necessary knowledge and framework to establish a comprehensive model of physical development, fitness, performance, and injury prevention. SPIDERfit provides professionals, parents, coaches, and teachers with the resources to improve the health, fitness, and performance of their youth.

Through a variety of free and premium services, SPIDERfit is the global go-to resource for practical, well researched, and effective youth physical fitness strategies. When we, as youth fitness and healthcare professionals, combine our knowledge and best practices into a centralized program with the goal of improving the health and fitness of our youngsters, we lay the framework for a future of happy, healthy, pain free adults.
